Filter media removes unwanted particles and pollutants from a range of liquids, from metalworking coolants to cooking oils, and everything in between. No matter how fluids are used, they will inevitably gather particles that reduce their efficiency, shorten their lifespan and harm equipment. Filter media removes these pollutants, extending the useful life of the fluid as well as reducing wear and tear on the equipment.

INDUSTRIAL FILTRATION

Filtration is the process of passing a fluid through a porous material, causing particles that contaminate the fluid to become trapped in the material. This results in a cleaner fluid. Industrial fluids are filtered to remove metallic particles created by the manufacturing process. Removing the particles will extend the useful life of the fluid, and reduce the cost of the manufacturing process.

Crystal Filtration’s pleated filter bags were originally developed to eliminate the needle hole found in sewn filter bags. These perforations are typically 60 microns wide and can make the difference between a 10 micron bag that removes 10 micron particles and one that leaves 50 micron particles in the fluid.

There are four important characteristics of filter media: strength, pore size, capacity, and chemical compatibility.

POWERLOFT®

POWERLOFT® has a gradient density that allows small particles to be captured deep within the web while larger particles are captured closer to the surface and only the very largest particles are captured on the surface. Debris is captured throughout POWERLOFT®, providing long filter cycles, good clarity, and lower operating cost.

POWERLOFT® is ideal for filtering coolants used in metal machining, grinding, drilling, honing, lapping, polishing, and any time the filter is undersized. Filter cycles with POWERLOFT® are often 5-10 times that of standard media.

General Points

  • Outstanding dirt holding capacity

  • Long filter life

  • Superior efficiency

  • High strength

  • Dual density construction

  • Good chemical resistance

  • High bulk-Increased void volume

COTRON is a mixture of cellulose and melt-blown polypropylene supported by a lightweight spunbond polypropylene and is designed to remove small particulate without rapidly blinding. It is nor very strong and is recommended for gravity applications where other media are either too porous or blind too rapidly. Ideal for use on gravity filters when filtering coolants used in fine griinding and honing applications.

General Points

  • Good Flow

  • High Efficiency

  • Increased Filter Life

  • Low Strength

  • Chemical Resistance

COTRON™

Most of the original coolant filters used Carded Rayon filter media. It was much less expensive than the woven cottons it replaced and provided good filtration efficiency. This commodity product was too weak for use in most vacuum filters and went out of favor when Hydromation Flatbed filters were replaced by vacuum filters.

General Points

  • Poor strength requires good support in the filter

  • Fluids readily flow through media, even at low pressure drops

  • Tolerant of tramp oil

  • Uniform pore distribution

Rayon

Polypropylene spunbonds are made from continuously extruded resins that are then point bonded for strength. Polypropylene is resistant to chemical attack but is prone to surface binding especially in the presence of tramp oils. Its low price makes Polypropylene ideal for filtering larger particle sizes such as those found in machining applications.

General Points

  • Continuous fiber thermally pointbonded for high strength

  • Uniform fiber size provides high level of porosity

  • Surface filtration

Polypropylene

MicroClean™ captures your smallest particles, providing the cleanest possible coolant. The small pore structure of the middle layer limits capacity, therefore MicroCLEAN may not be suitable for very high flow rates.

MicroCLEAN is ideal for filtering coolants used for honing and polishing when clarity is critical. Filter cycles with MicroCLEAN often more than double that obtained with SMS filter media.

General Points

  • Strong enough for most applications

  • Superior efficiency

  • Good capacity for small particulate

  • Provides the cleanest coolants

MicroClean™

This composite improves capacity and flexibility in many metal working fluids. The weight possibilities with HTM are endless. This media would be an excellent selection for small, medium, and large grinding.

Layered HTM is made by laminating multiple layers of thin spunbond materials to make a uniform structure.

General Points

  • Great flexibility and application

  • Good capacity and strength

HTM™ Composite Media

R30 is blended from a mixture of cellulose and polyester fibers with a chemical binder. The fiber distribution is very uniform allowing for a consistent pore size and a high efficiency to weight ratio.

Recommended for filtering fluids used in metal grinding and machining. Suitable for all filters up to 61” wide.

General Points

  • Good flow rate even under low pressure

  • Good efficiency

  • Good Filter life

  • High Strength

  • Uniform Pore size distribution

  • Max Width is 61”

R30

EnviroCLEAN is the first filter media made from 100% recycled plastic beverage containers and like all of Crystal Filtration’s other filter media, EnviroCLEAN filter media can be recycled again into other products after it has completed its useful life as a filter medium.

EnviroCLEAN is ideal for filtering coolants used in metal machining, grinding, drilling, or any time high strength is required.

General Points

  • Outstanding dirt holding capacity

  • Long filter life

  • Made from recycled bottles

  • High Strength

  • Good chemical resistance

  • High bulk-Increase void volume

EnviroClean™

Uniform fiber distribution creates higher efficiency than other nonwovens. Weakness caused by short fiber lengths and potential chemical attack on the binder makes wet laid materials inappropriate for some high load applications.

Confil filter media are recommended for filtering fluids used in washer, rolling, grinding, honing, and some gravity applications.

General Points

  • Uniform fiber distribution makes Confil excellent for removing small particles

  • High efficiency at low basis weight

  • Heavier webs are required to offset low strength

  • Available in 1.0, 1.5, and 2.5 oz. basis weight

ConFil

Polyester Felt is a high loft filter media that captures bigger particles on the surface and smaller particles deep within the web. The high loft provides high dirt holding capacity. The fibers are first entwined together before heat is applied to bond them into a high strength web.

Polyester felts are well suited for filtering coolants used in grinding applications. They are generally not suitable for particulate smaller than 20-25 micron.

General Points

  • Long filter life

  • High strength

  • Good chemical resistance

  • Available in various weights and sizes

  • Weights greater than 8oz are often used in filter bags

Felts

CoCLEAN’s mixture of microfibers, cellulose, and polypropylene allows small particles to be captured deep within the filter media without causing the media to blind prematurely. Black backing provides strength for the most demanding applications and easy identification to insure proper installation of the media.

CoClean is ideal for filtering steel mill rolling oils and coolants used for honing and polishing when clarity is critical.

General Points

  • Superior Efficiency

  • Great capacity for small particulate

  • White side up

  • High bulk-increased void volume

CoClean™

Layered Polypropylene has improved uniformity, capacity, and strength, without sacrificing the price savings one expects from polypropylene. Like all of Crystal Filtration’s filter media, it can be recycled into other products after it has completed its useful life as a filter medium.

General Points

  • Great strength

  • Improved capacity

  • Higher bulk than standard polypropylene

Layered Polypropylene

Polyester allows good flow and is tolerant of coolants with high levels of tramp oil. This product is most commonly found in applications where high strength is required and the particle sizes are large such as in coarse grinding or machining.

Spunbond Polyester is recommended for applications with larger debris and with heavy dirt loads requiring higher strength. Not recommended for fine filtration. We can make and sell all weights.

General Points

  • Continuous fiber thermally bonded for high strength

  • Uniform fiber size provides high level of porosity

  • Surface filtration • Available 0.5-3.0 ounces/sq. yd.
