Removing Aluminum Fines and Aluminum Soaps From an Undersized Filtration System

As the automotive industry has evolved, the material used in the production of vehicles has changed. Many carmakers are using high-strength aluminum to replace heavier steel. This allows the auto manufacturers to achieve a significant weight reduction, making their vehicles more environmentally friendly, by reduction of emissions.

Aluminum is now the prominent material for engines, transmissions, heat exchangers, and wheels. It is also increasingly being used to manufacture hoods, trunks, and bumpers. Soon even one of the most renowned American made pick-up trucks will come with an all-aluminum body.

The trend towards aluminum components in vehicles does have its machining challenges. One such challenge is the formation of aluminum soaps in metalworking fluid filters. Aluminum fines from machining the aluminum react with fatty acids in the metalworking fluids to form aluminum soaps.

The removal of the aluminum fines and therefore soaps from the metalworking fluid is critical to the tool life and quality of the parts being machined. Crystal Filtration’s CoCLEAN is an engineered filter media very specifically designed with the ability to filter off the viscous soaps at the forefront of the media while allowing the aluminum fines to pass through the initial layer of soap filtration and be caught in the inner workings of the filter media.  This technology creates space for superior efficiency in capturing a wide range of fine particles of all types simultaneously increasing tool life and part quality.

CoCLEAN’s mixture of microfibers, coarse, and fine allows small particles to be captured deep within the filter media without causing the media to blind prematurely. Black backing provides strength for the most demanding applications and easy identification to insure proper installation of the media.
